Welcome!
I'm so glad you're visiting today. It's always great to put a name with a face, or in this case, a name with a book. I realized in sixth grade that I wanted to write and over the years I was encouraged to do so by my family, memorable educators, writers' groups, co-workers, and friends.
My journey began when I discovered Nancy Drew moving on to Victoria Holt, Zane Grey, Emilie Loring, Grace Livingston Hill . . . you can see I've covered several different genres in my search to find my writing path. I've always enjoyed a good romance, a good mystery, dangerous times and places, and, of course, history. Add in my wish to honor the One who watchces over us, I wanted the characters of my stories to live their lives with faith and honor.
I hope you will have an opportunity to read my books and will enjoy the journeys of my characters who struggle and doubt, yet discover deeper commitment and joy when God directs their
steps. May you be blessed by these stories and want to share your reading experience with
others.
Blessings,
Barbara
My Story
I realized in sixth grade, after a much admired teacher praised a story I wrote, I wanted to write.
I wanted to create imaginary people and places and plop them into adventure and danger while
falling in love. I loved history and historical events. Combining my love of writing and history has
given me a way to be creative and honor God.
Besides my memorable sixth grade teacher, I had others who inspired my writing dream. My
father, a WWII vet, couldn 't drive by a national battlefield without stopping. My grandmother
was a voracious reader, as was my mother. and it was my mother who shared her fantasy dream of living somewhere tropical where she could paint to her heart's content. Her closest encounter with such a place was Florida, which held a special fascination for her. She also passed along her love of dance to me - not that I ever came close to her ability no matter how many years of tap and ballet I took. My husband wasn't much of a reader, but he encouraged me and never complained when I dragged him along to writing conferences. As long as that didn't interfere with his televised Washington football games.
While in middle and high school, I won several essay contests and contributed to the literary magazine in high school. After obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Old Dominion University, I went into banking, working in the industry for 25 years. I recently retired from Chesapeake Public Schools with 20 years of service where I was an administrative assistant in the Department of Communications. In that position, I wrote, edited, and proofed letters, public releases, and web site articles. I am a member of the American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) and the local ACFW, which meets in Chesapeake, VA. I’ve attended many writers’ conferences over the years in Virginia and North Carolina.
In addition to my love for all things historical, reading, and writing, I enjoy doll collecting, sewing doll clothes, and discovering Coca Cola memorabilia and anything nautical. I love to draw and write poetry. My feline calico child, Buttercup, loves her treats but dislikes the vet. And I reside in a neighborhood situated adjacent to the Great Dismal Swamp in Chesapeake, VA, an area filled with legends, historical significance, and mystery. Currently, I serve as a volunteer docent for the Great Bridge Battlefield and Waterways Museum, the site of a pivotal battle in the early days of the American Revolution.
I was first published by Pelican Book Group (White Rose Line) in 2010. You can firnd those three books under the PUBLISHED TITLES tab, which are still available through Pelican, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon. After I lost my husband in 2014, my writing went on the "back burner." When a local ACFW group reached out to me in 2023, they inspired me to pick up where I'd left off. I'm so glad I joined these fellow writers who remind me why I love to write.
